HAMILTON, Bermuda, June 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ —

On 16 June 2016, I made a statement to the people of Bermuda, following the unjust and unwarranted arrest of Dr Mahesh Reddy, Chief Medical Officer at my healthcare company Bermuda Healthcare Services.

This good and honourable man, who has provided many years of devoted service to the Bermudian people, has been unfairly dragged into a five year investigation by the Police aimed at discrediting me. This investigation has cost millions of dollars of Bermudian taxpayers’ money. This is disgraceful behaviour on the part of the Police.

Dr Reddy’s lawyers are challenging both the unlawful arrest and the raid on his home by the Police and are seeking monetary compensation and an apology.

Dr Ewart Brown’s Press Release

The Police now concede that this long investigation, based on nothing more than an unchallenged court statement in 2011 from the convicted Mr. David Bolden, has uncovered nothing.

Dr Reddy has told me that he has suffered attempts by law enforcement directly and openly to intimidate him into implicating me criminally by detaining him and saying that he would be released if he “gives me up”.

It is only reasonable that after five years, the Governor or the Police should be able to say whether Mr. Bolden’s statements were ever substantiated or if they will lead to any charges against me. Why has the Minister allegedly involved not been named or charged?

Now they have sought to prolong this investigation by making false allegations against my medical practice and harassing my associates.

I call upon the Governor and the Bermudian prosecutors to tell me on what grounds this desperate investigation can be allowed to continue after so many years of fruitless inaction and when the Police have tried to illegally harass a colleague in order to get to me.

It is time for them to stop this damaging and unwarranted campaign of harassment.

Premier, Craig Cannonier has been accused of offering a bribe to an Opposition MP in exchange for support for a plan to ditch a referendum on gaming, it has been claimed.

Shadow Finance Minister David Burt made the allegation in the House of Assembly on Friday, shortly after Opposition leader Marc Bean had made similar allegations against the Premier.

The One Bermuda Alliance had pledged to hold a referendum on gaming in its pre-election platform, and throughout its first year in office, maintained that it was committed to the ballot.

But in December, 2013 it controversially dropped that promise. The Premier claimed Government was forced into the U-turn after Mr Bean had suggested during a telephone conversation, that the Opposition could “undermine” the vote through a boycott.

According to Mr Burt, he was called to the Premier’s office just three days before Government announced it was scrapping the referendum. It is alleged that at that meeting, the Premier suggested that, with Opposition support, a costly referendum could be avoided, and that Mr Burt’s information technology company could be in line for a Government contract with the money saved.  [more]

BerNews says:

MP David Burt, who is an IT professional, said that Premier Craig Cannonier offered his company an IT contract in exchange for support in bypassing the referendum.

Mr. Burt said: “The language that he used was very clear. In soliciting my support for bypassing the referendum, he offered to give my company an IT contract with the money saved from the referendum to develop the absentee balloting system for the Parliamentary Registrar’s Office.”

Last night the Premier released a statement saying for “today’s Opposition, there are no limits. Friday’s House of Assembly statement by the Opposition Leader was just the latest step in his party-before- country strategy.”  [more]

  • “It’s what MP David Burt was asked to do get that economic benefit that is the issue here, It seems the corruption is fast becoming the middle name of the anti-Bermudian one term OBA government.”
